This public building in Tilburg brings together a library, a professional co-working office, public event spaces and several cultural associations for the professional arts and arts education.  The building is situated within the former Dutch railway train factories, of which the locomotive production hall will be adopted. Located in the center of the largest inner city redeveloping project and next to the Central Station, the building has a large impact on the future character of this late-industrial Dutch city.

The building facilitates a new and hybrid type of library: Besides storing and presenting books and other information media, the building will also offer shifting curated collections and facilitate the collaborative production of information. This takes places in ‘lab-chambers’, collective thematic workshop and exhibition chambers, scattered around the building and connected with the main collections. The architecture is characterized by a series of large open floors and spaces, which fits the heritage values of the voluminous existing structure as well as the open library concept itself. The spaces are flanked by six textile curtains that span from ceiling to floor and move on rails. The textiles enable spatial subdivisions through their changing configurations, for example; isolating the professional co-working area or changing the stepped floors into a large theater space. At the same time they regulate the acoustics and lighting conditions.

The open library space consists of several zones: A large public entrance hall offers visitors and passers-by a unique and inviting impression of the former production environment. This indoor square is followed by a series of terraced steps for reading, working, discussing, manufacturing and performing.  This public building is an open space for the consumption, sharing and production of knowledge and ideas, where everyone can find a suitable spot to sit down, using the flexible and movable furniture. From these terraces one can enter the professional co-working floor with services for entrepreneurs, which is surrounded by a carré of various meeting spaces. On a higher level, wide corridors run along all the facades of the building, offering views outside and places for silent study between coulissen of information racks. The corridors ultimately lead to an elevated wintergarden with a panoramic view on the city. This new type of open learning and knowledge centre for professionals and non-professionals will open it’s doors in 2018.
